Previous studies of paternal drinking and fetal growth in both animals and humans have produced conflicting results. The offspring also demonstrated atypical features such as increased anxiety or hyperactivity and reduced motor function, consistent with some documented behavior patterns of children born to alcoholic fathers.“Fathers who consistently consume moderate to high amounts of alcohol leading up to conception may negatively impact offspring development due to the exposure to the paternal sperm,” Huffman said. Paternal alcohol consumption before conception could affect child development.
For all three maternal drinking strata, all adjusted mean differences in birth weight across levels of paternal drinking were similar, and all had confidence intervals that included zero.
Further studies should be conducted to validate these results. We evaluated the association between paternal drinking before conception and infant birth weight in a cohort of 9,845 liveborn singleton infants born to couples who participated in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ALSPAC).
