USS Hornet (CV-8) was a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier that entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1941.The last ship of its class, Hornet earned famed in April 1942 when Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle launched his famed raid on Japan from the carrier's deck. In May 1942, the United States Naval Intelligence in Pearl Harbor intercepted a message from the Japanese military, underlining a plan to deal a fatal blow to the US Navy in another surprise attack with a force of aircraft carriers and battleships. A sonar image from R/V Petrel shows the wreck of USS Hornet (CV 8) resting on the ocean bottom in the South Pacific, nearly 17,500 feet below the surface. She was discovered on January 20, 2019 and was positivily identified, after footage from the wreck showed the Hornet’s naval designation: CV-8. When Japanese forces approached shortly thereafter and fired four torpedoes from two Japanese destroyers late in the evening on October 26, Hornet finally succumbed and slipped beneath the surface.
The wreck was located at a depth of more than 17,000 feet (5,200 m) off the Solomon Islands.The Hornet is best known for for the Doolittle Raid, when on April 18, 1942, sixteen B-25B Mitchell medium bombers were launched without fighter escort from the aircraft carrier USS During the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands where she was irreparably damaged by enemy torpedo and dive bombers on October 26, 1942. The two torpedoes produced flooding which resulted in the loss of all power and in a list of 7° to starboard after counterflooding.
