In Forest of the Dead, River didn't know she was going to die. One of the best episodes of series 9 But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song's squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. If it had, it would have been one for the ages. They often form a bridge between one series finale and the start of the next. 10 out of 17 found this helpful. I did get misty when they finally met again because Alex Kingston does a remarkable job making the scenes tender and memorable for fans. It does though have a more serious emotional aspect later on which is rather touching and adds a bit of weight to the otherwise very light entertainment. The biggest disappointment for me was that there was no mention of the next series, that omission left me a little flat. I don't think we've had such a genuinely heartfelt and funny episode of Doctor Who since the Pond era a few years back. Was this review helpful? Despite the fact that the episode continued the miserable Capaldi-era convention that the Doctor must be continually enthralled and tormented by a swaggering dominatrix, I was enjoying the fact that at least it was a different one this time, since I was good and sick of Clara by the time we were dragged through that last heavy-breathing farewell scene between her and the Doctor. The Husbands of River Song is my favorite Christmas Special Doctor Who episode yet. It helps if you know the character’s back-story and history with the Doctor but the story isn’t handcuffed by it.River has married the evil, robot-bodied King Hydroflax in order to steal the diamond.
This Christmas special is suitably festive fun with lots of humour.
The ending is the 100% perfect conclusion to the Doctor's and River Song's love story, and it really is emotional. Other than the doctor, River is my favourite Dr Who character. Not only is the Husbands of River Song a great Christmas Special, it's an all around great hour of Doctor Who. That’s a character I’d really love to see back in Aside from the crashing Baymax-alike action moments, the restaurant – which had a flavour of Deep Breath to it – had a particularly effective part when the Doctor and River were surrounded by strange people with heads they could rip open. After the more serious past few episodes, the more lighthearted tone of this special was rather welcome. Was this review helpful? The darker After all, across the dozen episodes we’ve seen since September, horror has never been too far from the surface in plenty of them. Season 9 was frustrating and disappointing and with a so called Christmas special following on quickly - perhaps too quickly - after it I wasn't expecting much at all , especially who know who appears in the title And yes, that has been neglected a lot lately. It’s been quite a ride, and The Husbands of River Song goes down as one of the best Who Christmas specials ever, if not the best. I am amazed at how the writers called back to Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (some of my favorite episodes) 5 series after they aired.
