I can recall watching the final minutes on my tiptoes at the back of the terrace near exit 13 when Rangers scored the equaliser, and we rejoiced. I walked into Glasgow City centre and made my way home to the east end of Glasgow where my mother was frantic with worry. Soon after wave after wave of rangers' fans recalled how they felt there had been an accident. I was an 11-year-old Celtic fan living a few miles away and waiting with some pals at the newsagent's door. Ibrox disaster 1971: Three eyewitnesses remember the horrific day 66 people died. I was 18 in 1971 and for the past almost 30 years have met people that were at the game but have never met or talked to any of the 145 others who were injured. I stayed conscious throughout until rescued by the police and was carried and laid out on the pitch. I was then carried into the stadium and this was the worst part. My oldest brother lost his best friend John Buchanan who sadly died in the crush. I was left in a dressing room where all around me were stretchers with bodies, no sounds and some already covered up. As I started down I was lifted off my feet by the press of the crown, again not unusual, but about a quarter of the way down I began slowly falling forward. Show caption 1 / 1. Normally it was very exiting to wait for the evening edition of the paper to be delivered, to get the headline, but that day, the headline was not about the result. The 1971 Ibrox disaster was a crush among the crowd at an Old Firm football game, which led to 66 deaths and more than 200 injuries. In 2010, three people who were closest to the Ibrox tragedy spoke to our sister title The Herald. I was at the game. The crush began to be unbearable until about half way down the crowd stopped moving but the pressure continued. The initial version of events of course was exasperating to me.
It saddens me to report that the guide reported the erroneous version of events, blaming the incident on supporters rushing back up stairway 13 after hearing Stein's equalising goal being scored. I remember shoes being strewn every where at the top of the staircase and I thought that these would be reclaimed by their owners. did not dispute the findings of Sheriff Irvine Smith and instead merely disputed the calculation of the damages as can be seen from the appeal judgement of the Sheriff Principal. In his book, Irvine Smith states that 30, and nearly 40 years after his decision, he is viewed with disapproval by some Rangers-supporting friends, who accuse him of "disloyalty".Hampden Park in Glasgow is the primary home stadium for the Scotland national football team.
The match finished 2–2, but is best remembered for the sending off of three players and the subsequent Court case that took place as a result.A memorial to those who died in the disaster, including a statue of then-captain Source: National Records of Scotland, Ref: SC36/1972/1/3 Interlocutors (viewing by appointment only).Source: National Records of Scotland, Ref: SC36/1972/1/3 Interlocutors (viewing by appointment only)Law, Life and Laughter; A personal verdict. I read all the dead peoples' names and noticed a man, John Gardener, whom I had played football with in Clydebank. The Ibrox Disaster remains a painful memory in the hearts and … I just wanted to sleep, (asphyxiation, lack of oxygen), but the man nearest to me slapped my face to try and keep me alert. It was the worst British football disaster until the Hillsborough disaster in Sheffield, England, in 1989. I am a Celtic fan, and Johnny was a Rangers' fan, I still have very good memories of Johnny - God rest his soul! I made my way by public transport to my home in the west end of Glasgow completely unaware of the tragedy that befallen my fellow Rangers supporters. I could not speak, was barely breathing, cold and in shock. It happened on 2 January 1971 in an exit stairway at Ibrox Park (now Ibrox Stadium) in Glasgow, Scotland. I was trapped, being crushed and lying almost horizontally, I managed to somehow free my upper chest and just managed to breath. Initial reports suggested the tragedy had been caused by supporters rushing back up the stairs, after a late Rangers' goal, colliding with people leaving the stadium. As was usual at that time there was crushing at the top of the stairs, especially at big games. I was numb in my legs which lasted a couple of weeks but had no other ill effect. The Ibrox disaster led to the stadium becoming all-seater Scotland have also played many of their home games in other stadiums throughout their history, both in friendly matches and for competitive tournaments. On 17 October 1987, Rangers faced Celtic in a Scottish Premier Division fixture at Ibrox Stadium, during the 1987–88 season. In 1969, 26 were injured in an accident on Stairway 13 during egress. The disaster occurred on Saturday, 2 January 1971, when 66 people were killed in a crush as supporters tried to leave the stadium. But a public inquiry discounted this theory and said the deaths were the result of the crush of fans pouring down stairway 13. There has scarcely been a darker day in Scottish football than the 2 nd of January 1971. This would be about 6pm on January 2, dark sky (the floodlights were on) and very cold.
